The Holiday Season Outside the MacDonald Highlands Gate Runs on a 5 p.m. Handoff

November 5, 2026

The brisket at Lester's Deli on Horizon Ridge Parkway starts out in Montreal. It's cured in the shop's signature spices and cooked for nine hours. Then it rides a refrigerated truck for three days to Southern Nevada, where it gets one more hour of cooking before it's hand-sliced and stacked on seeded rye with yellow mustard, Las Vegas Weekly reported in October. All that effort fits inside a short window. Lester's is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

That 4 p.m. close shows how this season works around MacDonald Highlands. The daytime places nearby close in the early-to-mid afternoon. The big holiday events start at 5. Almost nothing overlaps. So you're really planning two separate halves of a day, and the hour between them is the drive.

The daytime half closes early

Lester's is the newest daytime stop on that list. The 75-year-old Montreal smoked-meat shop opened its first U.S. location in August 2026 at 1590 W. Horizon Ridge Parkway #170. It chose Henderson over New York, Los Angeles or Chicago. Owner Kevin Fung opened it with Jean-Francois Blais, a Quebec-born Las Vegas musician with two decades on Cirque du Soleil productions. Blais told Las Vegas Weekly that "this is comfort food for us in Quebec."

The menu is short and specific:

  • Montreal Classic, $21: smoked meat, yellow mustard, seeded rye
  • Bernie Parent, $23: smoked meat with cheddar, onions and peppers on a hoagie roll, Lester's version of a Philly cheesesteak
  • Classic poutine, $13, or $18 with smoked meat
  • The Reuben, the bestseller, is one of the items made only for the U.S. menu

Inside, a tin-paneled ceiling and honeycomb-tiled floor sit next to a wall of Montreal decor. That includes a framed photo of Marc-André Fleury and a statue of Jonathan Marchessault, both Quebec-bred former Golden Knights stars. Those two hockey faces tie Lester's to a Knights night at Ethel M on November 20.

Sloan Canyon runs on daytime hours too. From October 1 through May 19, the Bureau of Land Management lists Petroglyph Canyon as day-use only, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. On Thanksgiving it closes at 12:30 p.m. On Christmas Day it opens at 12:30 p.m. Dogs aren't allowed on the Petroglyph Trail or in the canyon, though service animals are. The BLM's posted closure of Nawghaw Poa Road and its end-of-road parking area ran from November 12, 2024, to November 11, 2026, while the Visitor Contact Station was built. During that time, the Petroglyph Canyon Trail and the 101 Trail were rerouted and parking moved to Democracy Drive. Check the BLM's Sloan Canyon page for current access before you head out.

If you'd like to work on the canyon rather than just visit it, Friends of Sloan Canyon has a trail restoration on Cowboy Trail on Saturday, November 14, from 8 a.m. to noon. It repairs damage from rain in early August. The event is capped at 15 volunteers and involves at least four miles of hiking.

The District at Green Valley Ranch also keeps its markets in daylight. Per The District's event calendar, the Farmers Market is listed for November 5 through November 19 and again December 3 through December 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Market in the Alley runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Makers Hive runs 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Daytime stop Closes
The District Farmers Market 2 p.m.
Market in the Alley at The District 3 p.m.
Lester's Deli, Horizon Ridge Parkway 4 p.m.
Makers Hive at The District 4 p.m.
Petroglyph Canyon, Sloan Canyon NCA 4:30 p.m. in season

By 4:30, everything on that list is closed.

At 5 p.m., the cactus garden takes over

Ethel M Chocolates' 33rd annual Holiday Cactus Garden Lights opened November 5. It runs nightly through January 3 at 2 Cactus Garden Drive in Henderson, with a million lights strung through the garden and hot chocolate to carry along. No reservations are needed. Admission is $3.

Because it runs every night, the garden is the easiest piece of the season to plan around. The hours only change on the holidays themselves:

  1. November 6 through December 23: 5 to 10 p.m.
  2. Christmas Eve: 5 to 8 p.m.
  3. Christmas Day: closed
  4. December 26 through December 30: 5 to 10 p.m.
  5. New Year's Eve and New Year's Day: 5 to 8 p.m.
  6. January 2 and 3: 5 to 10 p.m.

Santa has his own schedule. He's there daily from 5 p.m. until an hour before closing through Wednesday, December 23. The line cuts off at 9 p.m. sharp, and he won't be there after the 23rd. A $40 Santa Express Pass reserves a date and time for front-of-the-line access, November 6 through December 23, for up to six people. Children under 2 and guests over 65 don't count toward the limit. A limited number of passes are released each night. Cashman Photography sells Santa photos on site, starting at $35 for one framed 8-by-6 print, or you can take your own.

The Pavilion also has a few themed nights. Holiday trivia is at 6 p.m. on Friday, December 4, and Saturday, December 12. Winter Wonderland is December 29, with snow starting at 5:30 p.m.

The District's single night lands on a Saturday

The District at Green Valley Ranch turns the 5 p.m. start into one evening. Its Annual Tree Lighting is Saturday, November 21, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Main Street. There will be falling snow, a meet-and-greet with the Snow Prince, Snow Princess and Snow Angels, live holiday music, sweets, and local artisans from Market in the Alley. Santa arrives to light the tree. The District's event page asks guests to RSVP.

That night, the 5 p.m. start that splits the rest of the season moves to Main Street. It's the one evening that calls for an RSVP. Ethel M is open every other night through the 23rd.

Other than the tree lighting, The District's Saturday markets all end by 4 p.m.:

Date At The District Hours
Saturday, Nov. 14 Makers Hive 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Saturday, Nov. 21 Annual Tree Lighting 5 to 8 p.m.
Saturday, Nov. 28 Makers Hive 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Saturday, Dec. 12 Market in the Alley 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Saturday, Dec. 19 Makers Hive 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Saturday, December 12 works especially well. Market in the Alley closes at 3 p.m., and Ethel M's holiday trivia starts at 6 p.m. the same night.

One Friday uses both halves

On Friday, November 20, at 6 p.m., Ethel M holds Henderson Silver Knights and Vegas Golden Knights Night. Anyone wearing Knights gear gets in free, and Lucky makes an appearance.

Lester's is open that Friday until 4 p.m. That makes for a full Knights-themed day. Lunch is under the Fleury photo and the Marchessault statue on Horizon Ridge Parkway. Then there's the gap. The garden opens at 5, and the Knights program starts at 6. The next evening is The District's tree lighting.

Here's the full late-November stretch:

  • Friday, Nov. 20: Lester's until 4 p.m., Knights Night at Ethel M at 6 p.m.
  • Saturday, Nov. 21: Tree Lighting on The District's Main Street, 5 to 8 p.m.
  • Thursday, Nov. 26: Petroglyph Canyon closes at 12:30 p.m. for Thanksgiving
  • Saturday, Nov. 28: Makers Hive at The District, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

From there, the season counts down to December 23, Santa's last night in the cactus garden. After that, the garden stays lit through January 3.

If the holidays have you thinking about how your home and your corner of Henderson fit the year ahead, Gianni Sammarco would be glad to talk it through. Request a private market consultation and valuation, and we can meet after lunch on Horizon Ridge and well before the lights come on.
