October 29, 2026
Through October, the Scenic Drive at Red Rock Canyon stayed open until 7 p.m. Timed-entry reservations stop being required at 5 p.m. That left two hours each evening when anyone could drive in without booking. On November 1 the drive started closing at 5 p.m., exactly when the reservation window ends, and it keeps that schedule through December.
That evening window is gone for the season. From Red Rock Country Club, the Scenic Drive is now something you either book ahead or reach before 8 a.m. The rest of the canyon area runs on separate rules, and most of the late-fall calendar fits around them.
From October 1 through May 31, the Bureau of Land Management requires a timed reservation for vehicles entering the Scenic Drive between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The Recreation.gov reservation page says vehicles entering before 8 a.m. or after 5 p.m. don't need one, as long as the drive is still open. The closing time is what determines how much of that free entry time exists in a given month.
| Month | Scenic Drive hours | Reservation required | Entry without a reservation |
|---|---|---|---|
| September | 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. | Not in season | All open hours |
| October | 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. | 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. | 6 to 8 a.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. |
| November and December | 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. | 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. | 6 to 8 a.m. only |
In November and December, the drive closes after sunset. According to timeanddate's Las Vegas sun table, sunset is at 4:44 p.m. on November 1 and 4:26 p.m. on November 30. In December it bottoms out at 4:25 p.m. from December 3 through 8, then moves back to 4:36 p.m. by December 31. The drive stays open 20 to 35 minutes past sunset. The October evening entries that let you catch golden hour on the loop are gone, because the light now ends before the gate closes.
That leaves the morning. Between 6 and 8 a.m. you can enter without booking anything. In November that means coming in under first light and staying through the low-angle hours, when the sandstone takes the color the Scenic Drive is known for.
Reserving a slot between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. costs $20 per personal vehicle or $10 per motorcycle or scooter, plus a nonrefundable $2 reservation fee per ticket. If you hold a valid pass, you pay only the $2. Slots are released in two rounds, 30 days in advance and again two days in advance, both at 7 a.m. Pacific.
Two dates on the calendar run shorter than the rest. On Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, BLM lists the Scenic Drive as open 6 a.m. to noon and the Visitor Center as open 8 a.m. to noon. With the drive closing at noon, the reservation period on those days covers only 8 a.m. to noon. Here is how the release schedule lines up with them:
For a Thanksgiving morning drive with visiting family, entering before 8 a.m. means no booking at all. Arriving later means trying for a slot in the November 24 release.
Red Spring and the rest of Calico Basin aren't part of the Scenic Drive reservation system. BLM's Red Rock Canyon Campground page describes Red Spring/Calico Basin as "a no fee area" that "does not require a reservation." The Red Spring Picnic Area and Boardwalk are open 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. from November through February. Those are the same hours as the Scenic Drive, but with no 8 a.m. cutoff. Mid-morning, lunchtime and 3 p.m. visits are all open to anyone who finds a parking space.
Parking is the one limit. The Red Rock Canyon Conservancy's fall notice lists the Calico Basin and Kraft Mountain trailheads, the Red Spring Boardwalk and Picnic Area, Red Rock Overlook, and Late Night Trailhead among the facilities currently open. It notes that parking is allowed only in lots and that gates close temporarily when lots fill and the area reaches capacity. It lists no current closures.
Red Rock Overlook on State Route 159 is also free and needs no reservation, with the same 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. hours from November through February. BLM notes that parking there may be limited. For someone who wants the view without the loop, the Overlook is a short stop on a weekday afternoon.
If you plan a picnic, Red Spring's metal grills are available again. BLM's signed rescission order lifted Stage 1 fire restrictions on lands managed by the Southern Nevada District effective October 1, 2026. Its year-round fire prevention order stays in effect. Recreation.gov's Red Spring listing allows charcoal fires only in the grills. BLM's visitor guide directs visitors to approved fire rings at the campground or at approved picnic areas.
Farther along State Route 159, Spring Mountain Ranch State Park at 6375 NV-159 in Blue Diamond has its own gate and its own fees. Nevada State Parks lists November through February hours as 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Day use costs $10 per vehicle with Nevada plates and $15 for out-of-state plates. Its regular day ends even earlier than the canyon's. The ranch's calendar for the next six weeks is more detailed than anything else in the area, though, and it includes the only scheduled evening event in this part of the valley.
The canyon and the ranch together offer these dated programs between now and mid-December:
Every item on the list starts by 10 a.m. except one, and most begin before 9. The exception is the November 14 stargazing night. It's the one scheduled event in the area that uses the early darkness, starting an hour after sunset with the park opened back up after hours.
When the canyon closes at 5 p.m., evenings move back toward Summerlin. Finney's Crafthouse opened September 21 at 10955 Oval Park Drive in Downtown Summerlin. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that it is the chain's first location outside California. After a 6 a.m. Scenic Drive entry, that makes for a full day that ends well after dark.
Starting November 20, Enchant runs at Las Vegas Ballpark through December 27. It includes a light maze, skating, Santa visits, live entertainment and seasonal food and drink. Like the stargazing night at the ranch, it's built for the hours after the canyon has closed.
The 6 to 8 a.m. reservation-free window lasts through February, and the 5 p.m. closing holds through December. The Thanksgiving and Christmas noon closures are the next dates to plan around.
Living a few minutes from the Scenic Drive gate is part of what a Red Rock Country Club home offers. If you would like to talk privately about how that canyon access affects your home's value this season, Gianni Sammarco welcomes you to request a private market consultation and valuation.
