Ascaya's Holiday Season Runs Downhill to Water Street This Year

October 22, 2026

"I think a lot of people didn't expect something like this happening in this part of town," Yeshua Estrada, manager of Terminal 4 Bar, told FOX5 in a mid-October story about Henderson's historic Water Street District. Terminal 4 sits on the second floor of a building that didn't serve drinks a year ago. That building is a large part of why this holiday season in Henderson is shaped differently from the ones before it.

For years, the big December nights downtown were events you drove to, watched, and left. This year the street around Water Street Plaza has places to go before and after, and that changes how the season fits together for anyone who lives up the hill in Ascaya.

Nine years with one coffee bar

Las Vegas Weekly gave the backstory in a September 3, 2026 piece. About a decade ago, as Water Street development was picking up, architect Windom Kimsey couldn't find a true coffee shop there. So in 2017 he opened Public Works Coffee Bar, which roasts its own coffee and bakes its breakfast bread at Chef Flemming's Bake Shop down the street. The Weekly reports that Public Works stayed the only dedicated coffee spot on Water Street for nine years.

In 2026 it got company. Here is the street as it stands this fall:

  • Public Works Coffee Bar. The original, open since 2017, with house-roasted coffee and bread from Chef Flemming's Bake Shop.
  • The Coffee Class, 37 S. Water St. Kyle Cunningham opened this location in the Town House Motor Lodge building, built in 1962. It calls itself a "specialty bakery bistro," uses Onyx Coffee Lab beans, and serves dishes from pastries to spinach crab benedict and French dip au jus. Its website lists hours of 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Terminal 4, upstairs at the same address. A cocktail lounge on the second floor. FOX5 describes an international drink menu and exotic cocktails.
  • Better Buzz, Water Street at Lake Mead Parkway. The San Diego chain opened a drive-thru there in June. Its trademarked Best Drink Ever is a vanilla americano.

The Coffee Class building has three levels. Coffee and food are on the ground floor, the bar is on the second floor, and an open-air rooftop deck is on top. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported in August that the rooftop was being used for events. Las Vegas Weekly reported in September that Cunningham is turning it into a weekend brunch area, so treat rooftop brunch as coming later. For now, The Coffee Class offers the rooftop and the second-floor bar as private event spaces.

The hours matter for the holidays. The coffee house closes at 4 p.m., before any of the downtown evening events start. So a Water Street holiday night now has two separate places to stop: Terminal 4 upstairs in the evening, and the café downstairs the next morning.

WinterFest now has somewhere to go after

The City of Henderson has set WinterFest 2026 for December 3 and 4. It's free and runs over two nights. One night has the tree lighting and a drone show. The other has the Electric Light Parade. As of mid-October, the city page says to check back for 2026 details. The schedule printed further down that page is from 2025, so don't plan around it.

Last year's times still show the general rhythm. In 2025, the tree lighting ran 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Water Street Plaza, and the parade ran 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. along Water Street. Those times are a pattern, not a promise. Both are early-evening events that end with most of the night still ahead. Until this year, that leftover time had nowhere obvious to go on the street itself. Now there is a lounge upstairs in the motor lodge building, a few steps off the parade route.

The 2026 order of the two nights hasn't been posted. Check the city page before you pick the night.

The season actually opens a month earlier, on Cactus Garden Drive

The holiday season in this part of Henderson starts on November 5, almost a month before WinterFest, at Ethel M Chocolates, 2 Cactus Garden Drive. This year's Holiday Cactus Garden Lights run from November 5 through January 3, every night except Christmas Day, and no reservations are needed.

The hours change around the holidays, which is easy to miss:

Dates Hours
Opening night, Nov. 5 5 to 10 p.m.
Nov. 6 to Dec. 23 5 to 10 p.m.
Christmas Eve, Dec. 24 5 to 8 p.m.
Christmas Day, Dec. 25 Closed
Dec. 26 to Dec. 30 5 to 10 p.m.
New Year's Eve and New Year's Day 5 to 8 p.m.
Jan. 2 to Jan. 3 5 to 10 p.m.

Santa is there daily from 5 p.m. through Wednesday, December 23, and not after. The line closes at 9 p.m. sharp. To skip the wait, the $40 Santa Express Pass reserves a date and time between November 6 and December 23. It covers up to six guests, and children under 2 and guests over 65 don't count toward that limit.

The special nights in the garden's Pavilion are spread through the season:

  1. November 11, 5 p.m. Free entry for veterans with valid ID.
  2. November 20, 6 p.m. Henderson Silver Knights and Vegas Golden Knights Night. Wear Knights gear for free entry and a visit with Lucky.
  3. December 1 to 3, 5 p.m. First Responders Night, with free entry with valid ID. The last of these nights falls on December 3, the first night of WinterFest.
  4. December 4 and 12, 6 p.m. Holiday trivia, $5 plus tax, reservations required.
  5. December 29, from 5:30 p.m. Winter Wonderland, with snow falling in the garden, a 6 p.m. screening of Frozen, and an Elsa and Anna meet-and-greet. $5 plus tax, reservations required.

The December 4 trivia night lands on the second night of WinterFest. If you want both, you'll have to choose between the garden and downtown that evening.

The daytime calendar fills the gaps

The City of Henderson's events calendar has daytime dates between the two big evening draws:

  • Heritage Harvest Festival: Saturday, November 7, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Pictures with Santa: December 5, 9 to 11 a.m., then Puppy Pictures with Santa from 11 a.m. to noon.
  • Reindeer Dash 5K and 1-Mile Walk: December 12, 10 a.m. to noon.
  • Merry Grinchmas at Heritage Bark Park: December 19, 10 a.m. to noon.
  • Winter Solstice at the Bird Viewing Preserve: December 20, 2 to 4 p.m.

Most of these are morning events, and The Coffee Class opens at 6:30 a.m. That makes a Saturday morning downtown easy to plan for the first time.

The trailhead that comes after the holidays

The last date this season belongs to Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area, on the other side of the McCullough Range. The Bureau of Land Management closed Nawghaw Poa Road and the parking area at its end from November 12, 2024, to November 11, 2026, to build the Sloan Canyon NCA Visitor Contact Station. The Petroglyph Canyon Trail and the 101 Trail were rerouted, and parking moved to Democracy Drive. Here is BLM's original closure announcement.

BLM hasn't announced a reopening date to go with the November 11 end of the closure order. The best clue to when the new station will open comes from Friends of Sloan Canyon. The group scheduled a trail-restoration morning with BLM for October 25, from 9 a.m. to noon, "to prepare the area around the Visitor Contact Station for the grand opening in January." BLM hasn't posted that date itself. Until it does, plan on using the Democracy Drive reroute and check the BLM Sloan Canyon page before you go.

The project plans describe a 3,000-square-foot station with interpretive displays and restrooms, an ADA-accessible half-mile interpretive loop, an outdoor amphitheater, and parking for about 80 cars. BLM counts more than 300 rock-writing panels and nearly 1,700 designs at the Sloan Canyon Petroglyph Site. BLM's posted day-use hours for October 1 through May 19 are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily, and it recommends Petroglyph Canyon on weekday mornings, Monday through Thursday. If the January opening holds, the new trailhead opens in the middle of the coolest hiking months, just after the Ethel M garden turns off its lights on January 3.

If the holidays have you thinking about how Water Street's comeback and a new Sloan Canyon trailhead could affect the hillside homes above them, Gianni Sammarco can walk you through it. Request a private market consultation and valuation.
